Description

In the centre of Matosinhos, we can still find many examples of bourgeois houses in the Porto style, or variations thereof, built between the 19th century and the early 20th century. The Roberto Ivens House is one such house — with the distinction of having been refurbished by Siza himself as a home for his parents in 1961, initiating a harmonious dialogue between the old and the new that reveals the architect’s critical and precocious sensibility.

In 2022, the family home of the architect Álvaro Siza, located on Rua Roberto Ivens, was handed over by Matosinhos Municipal Council to Casa da Arquitetura to establish the ‘Residências da Casa’ programme there.

To adapt the building to its new role as an artists’ residence, refurbishment works were carried out by the local authority, under the close supervision of Álvaro Siza. The renovation preserved the essence of the original design, keeping the memory of the house alive whilst equipping it with the necessary facilities to accommodate its temporary residents.
